The job
Catches patients who say they left the ER without being seen, and gets the ones who can be identified called back fast, most urgent warning signs first. Finds silent walk-outs by checking in with patients, and confirms what happened to them.
The moment
The 08:00 review replays the night as a strip of dots, one for each patient who said they left the ER without being seen. It opens on a red dot at 01:25.
The message reads: "left the ER after three hours, my father still has chest pain, we're going elsewhere".
Staff are paged at 01:27 and the family is called at 01:34: a doctor is waiting at the door. The patient returns, is seen at 01:52, and the dot turns green.
Across the night there were 14 dots, 9 of them green, with a median of 11 minutes to callback. Three were only found by asking patients whether they got seen.
