Voice AI
Voice AI is automation that handles spoken conversations using speech recognition, language understanding, and speech synthesis. It carries constraints text automation does not: recognition errors on names and numbers, sensitivity to accents and dialects, and a much lower customer tolerance for response latency.
Latency
Latency is the delay between a customer’s message and the first useful response. In live chat and voice it directly shapes perceived quality, and it is one of the few AI quality measures a customer notices immediately, well before judging whether the answer was correct.
Contact center as a service
CCaaS stands for Contact Center as a Service. It is cloud-delivered software for managing customer interactions, and it covers call routing, IVR, omnichannel queues, recording, and reporting. A company buys CCaaS by subscription instead of building and running its own telephony hardware. CCaaS differs from UCaaS, which handles internal employee collaboration like chat and video meetings. It also differs from on-premise platforms, where a company owns and maintains its own infrastructure. Example: a bank migrates its voice and chat queues to a CCaaS platform, then connects AI agents through the vendor’s APIs to automate routine inquiries like balance checks and card replacements. AI vendors typically integrate on top of or alongside CCaaS rather than replacing it. This is one reason CCaaS sits near the center of most contact center AI terms: almost every AI deployment in contact centers has to plug into one.
Proof of concept
A Proof of Concept, or PoC, is a short, time-boxed test. It checks whether an AI system can handle a specific job using the buyer’s own data and workflows, before any wider AI deployment in contact centers goes ahead. A PoC answers one narrow question: does it work here. This is different from a pilot, which runs on a limited slice of live production traffic, and from a full rollout, which scales the proven workflow company-wide. Example: routing password-reset requests to an AI agent for four weeks, with written success criteria agreed in advance, such as containment rate and escalation accuracy. The most common failure mode is an open-ended PoC with no defined exit criteria, which can drag on for months without a real answer. Agreeing written exit criteria before the PoC starts, as in the example above, gives the test has a clear end point and a clear decision at the end of it.
