median warning from the first sign of a spike to its peak, across 31 spikes in 26 themes

From the first sign of a complaint spike to its peak took a median of one week (95% interval zero to one week). In 14 of 31 spikes, the first sign came in the peak week itself.

If one week is all the warning there is, a monthly report arrives after the peak.

CFPB Consumer Complaint Database (CC0), complaints received 2 Sep 2024 to 30 Aug 2026. 31 spikes in 26 themes across 8 sectors; median one week, 95% interval zero to one week. Read 25 Sep 2026.

What we counted

Weekly CFPB complaints by theme in nine US consumer-finance sectors, 2 Sep 2024 to 30 Aug 2026. A spike is a week at double the theme’s median for the previous eight weeks, with 30 or more complaints. The first sign is the first of two weeks at 1.5 times that median. We found 31 spikes across 26 themes after leaving out spikes driven mostly by one company. With them included, 41 of 69 peaked in the first week.

Try this week

Set your alert on the first week a complaint theme runs at 1.5 times its normal level, not on the peak, and name an owner that same week.

Limits

Complaints to a regulator may lag what a company hears in its own channels. 31 spikes is just above our minimum of 30, so treat the median as approximate.

A September 2026 preprint by Sujan Sapkota, using older CFPB complaint narratives, reached a similar conclusion: complaints register a shock quickly but give no systematic advance warning.

Source: CFPB Consumer Complaint Database (structured records, CC0), read 25 Sep 2026. Sample: 31 spikes in 26 themes, 8 sectors, after excluding spikes where one company was above 25%. Period: received 2 Sep 2024 to 30 Aug 2026. Aggregation: weekly by theme; spike at 2x the trailing 8-week median and 30 or more; first sign at the first of two weeks at 1.5x; median with a bootstrap interval. Caveat: regulator complaints may lag; the count sits just above the minimum.
